The Cyprus Planetarium: A Technological Marvel
As the Head of IT of the first planetarium in Cyprus, I am thrilled to share with you the technological advancements that we have incorporated into our state-of-the-art facility.
At the heart of our planetarium lies an 18.25-meter dome, the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean, that serves as the centrepiece of this incredible facility. Installed by RSA Cosmos-Konica Minolta, the dome is equipped with a powerful digital system achieving 9.6K resolution using 10 Sony VPL-GTZ280 4K projectors, each with 5,000 lumens light output and smooth, ultra-responsive reproduction of fast-moving action. The long-lasting laser light source is combined with 4K SXRD panel technology to deliver bright, crisply detailed images which are projected onto an Astro-Tec screen. To enhance the visual experience, the planetarium also features Dolby Atmos 5.1 surround sound, a revolutionary spatial audio technology that creates an immersive soundscape. Combined, the audio and powerful visual systems create an immersive and truly unforgettable experience.
The planetarium runs on SkyExplorer, RSA Cosmos-Konica Minolta’s powerful astronomical software, which delivers the most stunning and scientifically accurate content in real-time, setting the industry standard. RSA Cosmos-Konica Minolta also installed great planetarium equipment such as the lighting system, a multilingual system, and comfortable seats from Figueras. Everything needed to make the entire experience one to remember.
In addition to the planetarium, we also have an Observatory which consist of a 4 meter robotic dome, a 14”/356mm diameter telescope for viewing the night sky, and an helioscope for daytime observing of our Sun and the spectacular solar flares. Both the telescope and the helioscope are on robotic bases for precise positioning and are equipped with a Sony IMX455 CMOS 62 mega pixel (9576px x 6388px) camera for live photography and remote streaming. We can live stream from the observatory directly to the planetarium dome, the conference room, the open-air amphitheatre, as well as remotely online or to other planetariums around the world.
Adjacent to the observatory is the Sky Amphitheatre with a capacity of 250 people and features a 15sq.m outdoor video wall complete with live performance audio equipment and lighting.
For those seeking a fully immersive experience, we have a VR Game Hall with gaming simulators for a highly immersive virtual reality gaming experience, and a VR Edutainment Hall where you can watch short 360 degree educational and entertainment films in virtual reality, or explore the universe on our 100” flatscreen interactive table.
We also have a conference hall which accommodates 90 people and features an 18sq.m video wall, fully equipped for events, presentations, and meetings.
And, when it’s time to take a break, you can enjoy a bite to eat or a coffee at the café, try a healthy meal at the Celestial Restaurant, and visit the Enthymio Shop for that perfect gift.
The Cyprus Planetarium is a technologically advanced astronomical experience that offers visitors the opportunity to explore the wonders of the universe like never before. With state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, our planetarium is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in astronomy and technology, and promises to be a source of inspiration and education for generations to come.
