Planetary Parade

The new year couldn't have started better, as astronomy enthusiasts will have the chance to witness an impressive planetary parade.

A planetary parade occurs when several planets in the Solar System align in the night sky, allowing observers to see them simultaneously. In reality, the planets aren't all lined up in a straight line, but that's how it will appear to us from Earth. This alignment only happens when the planets are on the same side of the Sun as Earth.

This planetary parade will initially be visible on January 21st with six planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) and will last for about five weeks, peaking on February 28th, when Mercury will join the lineup, creating a very rare phenomenon: a seven-planet parade.

Venus and Jupiter, the brightest of the planets, will be easy to observe as they will shine brighter than the stars, making them very impressive. Venus will appear in the southwestern sky, while Jupiter will shine in the southeastern/southern sky all night long. Mars and Saturn, though less bright, will also be visible to the naked eye. Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope.

This rare planetary parade of 2025 is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the night sky and marvel at this spectacular show generously offered to us by the universe.
